Overview
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a globally significant rainforest in southwestern Uganda (Kanungu, Rubanda & Kisoro districts). Covering ~331 km², Bwindi shelters more than half of the world’s mountain gorillas and supports exceptionally rich wildlife, birdlife and plant diversity.

Practical Information
Permits & Rules
- Gorilla permit required — issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority (book early).
- Maximum 8 visitors per gorilla family; viewing time is strictly 1 hour.
- Minimum age: 15 years for gorilla trekking.
- Visitors with communicable illness will be restricted for gorilla safety.
- Keep a safe distance, avoid direct eye contact, and follow ranger instructions.
What to Bring
- Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and long-sleeve shirt
- Lightweight waterproof jacket / poncho and gardening-type gloves
- Insect repellent, sunscreen, hat, binoculars, camera (no flash)
- Daypack, water (at least 1 litre), snacks, personal medication
- Cash for tips and local purchases (small denominations)
Best Time to Visit
Dry seasons offer the easiest trekking conditions: June–August and December–February. Bwindi is accessible year-round, but trails may be muddy and slippery during the long rains (March–May & September–November).
How to Get There
- By Road: Approx. 8–10 hours from Kampala/Entebbe (depending on sector and stops).
- By Air: Scheduled/charter flights to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrips with short road transfers.
